When Clients Move to Florida, Watch Out for These Estate Planning Quirks
Day Pitney Trusts and Estates Partner Tasha Dickinson was recently featured in ThinkAdvisor, where she offered insights for advisors on key estate planning considerations for clients relocating to Florida. Dickinson explained that while out-of-state estate planning documents remain valid, Florida’s unique laws governing homestead property and personal representatives can create unexpected complications if not properly addressed. She emphasized the importance of early planning and collaboration among a client’s financial advisor, CPA, and estate attorney to ensure a seamless transition and help prevent family disputes.
“Estate planning documents aren’t invalid because they were executed in another state,” Dickinson noted. “The problem is that there are nuances in Florida law … that are unique to the state.”
