IP Applications in Sports & Introduction to NIL — New England Law, Boston, MA
On October 15, Day Pitney Intellectual Property Attorneys Brandon McCool and Adam Weisman served as guest lecturers at New England Law’s Sports Law class, taught by CJ Davis, Deputy General Counsel and Head of Sports Business and Legal Affairs at PUMA North America, Inc.
Their presentation, “IP Applications in Sports & Introduction to NIL,” explored the intersection of intellectual property and name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights within the sports industry. They discussed key principles of copyright and trademark law, fair use, social media considerations, IP clearance, and licensing. The lecture also examined the evolution of NIL rights, recent policy developments, and how these changes are transforming college athletics—creating new opportunities and challenges for student-athletes, universities, and sponsors.
