Gaps in California Privacy Law: Half of Data Brokers Ignore Requests
Day Pitney Partner and co-chair of the Data Privacy, Protection and Litigation practice, William Roberts, was recently featured in Dark Reading discussing a University of California, Irvine study on widespread noncompliance by data brokers with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). While the report raised concerns about privacy risks and weak enforcement, Roberts noted the gaps mirror the early days of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), when organizations faced a steep learning curve in adjusting to complex requirements. He emphasized that while larger companies may adapt more quickly, industry-wide compliance will take time and require the development of automated processes.
As Roberts explained, this adjustment period is to be expected: “As the GDPR’s early days showed, it takes awhile for organizations to comply with complex regulations.”
